Faces of Nigerian Out-of-School Children

February 7, 2014

According to United Nations Scientific, Cultural and Educational Organisation, UNESCO about over 10 million Nigerian children are out of school. Indeed, Nigeria is said to have the worst record in the world.

Ninety percent of illiterate Nigerian children come from the North, the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed. Speaking during a working visit to Akwa Ibom State, Wike said that about 10 million of Nigerian children are illiterate, out of which nine million come from the North,

This unfortunate situation is in the midst of obscene national opulence in which up to 200 individuals are said to own private Jets, and cars valued at about N38 million can be found on Nigerian road while some citizens can afford to buy a bottle champagne for N200,000 in a nightclub in Abuja.

These pictures taken within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and Katsina State, during school hours (between 10am-12pm) at different days reflect the sad situation of children who were busy hawking on streets and in the market or going around while their more privileged colleagues are busy in school.
